Mahoning Co. Land Bank Celebrates 15 Years

The Mahoning County Land Bank is celebrating 15 years in service. In honor of the accomplishment, it’s recognizing those who got it started.
In 2011, Mahoning County commissioners established the Land Bank to address the number of vacant or abandoned lots in the area.
Thursday, Land Bank Executive Director Deborah Flora presented commissioners with an award as a thank-you for leading the charge 15 years ago, and highlighted the work that’s been accomplished as a result.
“We were very interested in getting that to be a part of Mahoning County so that we could help areas with demolition ground fill money. And they started in one office,” said Commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti. “And now, Deb has a full staff, as you’ve heard. They’re all over Mahoning County, taking down things for the Brownfield Remediation.”
“We couldn’t do what we’ve done over 15 years were it not for the commissioners deciding to create this program,” Flora said. “They’re not required to have a county land bank by law. But it was something where they saw a need.”
Over the years, the Land Bank has built up a staff of five full-time and three part-time employees.
