Dutchess County and the City of Poughkeepsie are hoping a joint land bank can help the city reduce its number of abandoned properties and expand its tax base.
John Penney, City of Poughkeepsie community engagement director, told the Journal on Wednesday there are roughly 300 vacant properties in the city.
“It’s time to transform them into new opportunities for local residents,” Legislator Randy Johnson, D-Poughkeepsie said in a release announcing the Legislature had approved a resolution Monday to create the land bank.
Poughkeepsie’s Common Council and Mayor Rob Rolison approved the initiative in February.
An application to the state’s land bank program will be submitted, with County Executive Marc Molinaro’s signature, the release from the Legislature’s Democratic caucus said.
