Memo 1123 Reporting Cause of Mold
To: All SPI Contractors
From: Robert Klein

In July of 2004, Safeguard sent out Contractor Memo 1083: Redistribution of Memos About Reporting Mold Damage. This memo referenced two previous mold-related memos and emphasized the importance of reporting and properly documenting details about the cause, location, and extent of mold damage.

A number of recent updates reporting mold conditions have come in lacking identification of the cause of mold. We would like to remind our contractors that identifying the cause of mold and correcting the source of moisture that is leading to mold are essential components of properly reporting a mold condition. This is crucial information that must be included on every bid to cure a mold problem. Failing to address a moisture source when remediating mold damage will inevitably lead to a recurrence of the mold condition, which will cost our clients, Safeguard, and ultimately the contractor, unnecessary time and money.

If we do not properly address the cause of the mold, we cannot consider the mold removal successful. Complete and thorough documentation of the mold condition and source of mold on your first visit improves our ability to properly cure the mold condition, and it prevents your having to return to the property to provide additional information, as all necessary information will be available to our clients on the initial property condition report.

If you have any questions at all about this memo, please contact your regional coordinator.
