Memo 1137 - Dutch Elm Disease
To: All Minnesota and Wisconsin Vendors
From: Vendor Management

Safeguard is working to improve communication with M&M contractors by conducting monthly conference calls to review issues. In a recent call with Best Assets, it was discussed that elm trees in Minnesota and Wisconsin are susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease, caused by beetle infestation. The cities in these states are issuing city citations and violations for the diseased trees. In many cases the only indication of the citation or violation is a circle or X mark on the trunk of the tree. If you find a marked tree at a property, it is important that you provide a bid to remove the tree and include details regarding the posting. Your bid should include the number of trees affected and the amount to remove per tree.

Failure to note this condition can result in HUD and our clients holding us responsible for the cost to remove the tree. If you have any questions regarding this requirement please contact our High Risk Manager, Steve Meyer at steve.meyer@safeguardproperties.com or ext. 1179.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
