MEMO #5005: Locating Properties - 09/12/02

We all know that bad addresses are among the bigger aggravations our inspectors must deal with. Bad addresses can result in wasted time, mileage, and money. We'd like to propose a couple of preventative measures to reduce the number of bad addresses that lead to wasted trips.

We have a list of websites we consult when you report a bad address or difficulty locating a property. You might be able to save yourself a long drive going nowhere if you consult these sites before you leave to confirm property locations or check the validity of the addresses you're to inspect that day. Here are several of the sites we regularly reference.

  1. www.usps.com - use Find Zip Codes to verify addresses
  2. www.melissadata.com - click Free Lookups, then Address Lookup to verify addresses
  3. www.mapquest.com - to find maps or get driving directions
  4. www.mapblast.com - to find maps or get driving directions
  5. www.expedia.com - click the Maps tab to get maps or driving directions
  6. www.netronline.com - click Public Records Online. Select the state from the map, then choose the correct county, and then select Home Page Only or Go To Data Online to get property information (legals, etc.) or the telephone numbers for the county tax assessor or recorder.

Also remember that if you get an address that looks like it might be incomplete (like one that just says "RR 22" for street address), you shouldn't hesitate to call us and ask us to confirm the address before you set out to try to find it. Similarly, if you cannot locate a property, e-mail us right away so we can advise the client to obtain additional information.

One last thing: if you've tried any of these resources and still have not been able to get a good address or location, please be sure to let us know what resources you consulted so that we don't duplicate your efforts.

We're here to help each other get accurate results as efficiently as possible. We hope that these resources prove to be of some help to you. If you have any comments, or if you use other tools that you think might be helpful to other inspectors, please feel free to let us know. We appreciate your feedback.
