New Orleans residents can now track the progress of blighted properties within the code enforcement system  in the city through a new interactive online tool called BlightStatus.

The city collaborated with Code for America, a web-based company that helps governments disseminate information to their constituents through interactive online programs.

Two years ago Mayor Mitch Landrieu unveiled a comprehensive blight eradication strategy targeting up to 10,000 blighted properties by 2014.

At the time the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center said there were between 50,000 to 60,000 blighted residential and commercial properties in New Orleans.  They reported in March that the number of blighted properties has been reduced by 8,000 since 2010.

Although the website is still in a testing stage, people can log on to blightstatus.nola.gov to search addresses of blighted properties within the code enforcement system. The search results will bring up the code enforcement records on the property.
