Storm Sweeps Through Sumner County
Wellington, Kan. — Sumner County was in the bulls-eye of severe storm, and tornado activity on Saturday night. Sumner County Emergency Management (SCEM) said that no one has been hurt.
"We've got power polls down all around the western end of the County," said SCEM Director, James Fair said just after midnight on Sunday morning. "At this moment we've not had any injuries reported."
With the downed power lines being the bulk of the problems in the County, the extent of the damage is still sketchy.
"I know of one house that's been destroyed South of Argonia," Fair said. "I think there's another one on north Milan road that's destroyed." The latter account is unconfirmed.
"We had damage that started around the Argonia area, and ended west of Conway Springs," Fair explained. "I think there is one house just west of Conway Springs that is damaged, but we don't know if that's tornado or wind damage." Tornado sirens did sound in Wellington at approximately 9 or 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Fair said, as Wellington appeared to be in the storms path. The SCEM Director also advised sight-seers to steer clear of the damaged areas.
"Stay away, they're not helping anything," Fair continued. "They're going to cause emergency crews a problem. Power lines are down...the more people are out there the more the opportunity for people to get hurt."
